Scout Terra: The Electric Pickup With a Gas Backup
The Scout Terra is a full-size pickup Scout Motors revealed on October 24, 2024, offered as a battery electric truck or with a gasoline range extender. It is planned for release in late 2027 as a 2028 model and will be built in Blythewood, South Carolina.
The Terra rides on a body-on-frame platform built just for Scout, and unlike other electric pickups, it uses a solid rear axle. Mechanical locking differentials front and rear and all-wheel drive are standard. The electric version uses an 800-volt system and is expected to make up to 1,000 lb-ft of torque, and the truck is expected to tow more than 10,000 pounds. Scout's own team designed it in Novi, Michigan, and it uses the North American Charging Standard plug.
Battery models are projected to go up to 350 miles on a charge. The range-extended version, which Scout calls the Harvester, adds a naturally aspirated four-cylinder built by Volkswagen in Silao, Mexico, mounted behind the rear axle, for up to 500 miles: about 150 on electricity and 350 on gasoline. Battery sizes haven't been confirmed, but the electric version is expected to use a 120 to 130 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt pack and the Harvester a smaller 60 to 70 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate pack.
A double cab and 5.5-foot bed are standard, and a front bench seat is optional. The bed has one 240-volt and two 120-volt outlets, and the front trunk adds another 120-volt outlet and USB-C ports. The truck fits tires up to 35 inches: trucks on 33s keep the spare under the bed, and trucks on 35s need a bed-mounted carrier. The name comes from the 1976 to 1980 Scout II Terra pickup, a long-wheelbase version of the Scout II.
