Scion FR-S: The Affordable Rear-Drive Sports Coupe
The Scion FR-S was a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe co-developed with Subaru, beloved for its balance and affordability.
Launched in 2012, the FR-S was Scion's halo sports car, jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru. Sold as the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 elsewhere, it used a Subaru boxer engine and a classic front-engine, rear-drive layout focused on handling rather than horsepower.
Its low weight, low center of gravity, and near-perfect balance made it a driver's favorite and a modern affordable sports car icon. The naturally aspirated 2.0-liter flat-four produced around 200 horsepower, prioritizing engagement over outright speed.
When Scion was discontinued in 2016, the FR-S was rebranded as the Toyota 86 in North America, continuing its legacy under the Toyota badge.
