What is Unsprung Weight?
Unsprung weight is the mass of components not supported by the springs, such as wheels, tires, and brakes, and reducing it generally improves handling and ride quality.
Unsprung weight refers to the mass of a vehicle's components that sit on the wheel side of the suspension springs, moving with the road surface rather than being isolated from it. This includes the wheels and tires, brake calipers and rotors, and portions of the suspension itself such as control arms, hub assemblies, and, depending on the design, part of the spring and damper mass. Sprung weight, by contrast, is everything supported by the springs, including the body, chassis, engine, and interior, which the suspension actively works to isolate from road imperfections.
Lower unsprung weight matters because the suspension has to accelerate and control that mass every time a wheel encounters a bump, dip, or change in road surface. Heavier unsprung components have more inertia, meaning the suspension takes longer to react and control wheel movement, which translates to a wheel that is momentarily less able to maintain consistent contact with the road, reducing grip and responsiveness. Lighter unsprung components let the suspension react faster to road irregularities, improving both handling precision and ride comfort, since the wheel can follow the road surface more closely without transmitting as much of that motion back into the chassis.
Common ways to reduce unsprung weight include lightweight forged or flow-formed wheels in place of heavier cast wheels, lighter brake rotors and calipers, and lightweight suspension components such as aluminum control arms in place of steel. Because unsprung weight reduction has an outsized effect on suspension response relative to its actual weight savings compared to reducing sprung weight elsewhere in the car, it is a frequent focus for both motorsport engineering and street performance upgrades, particularly lightweight wheel swaps, which are among the most common and cost-effective unsprung weight reductions available to enthusiasts.
