Legendary Tokyo highway street racing club active 1987-1999. Strict rules, including 160 mph minimum top speed for membership. Disbanded after a fatal accident.
Mid Night Club (or simply Mid Night) was a legendary Tokyo street racing club active from 1987 to 1999. The club was famous for its strict membership rules, secrecy, and the extreme performance of member cars. Membership required a verified top speed of at least 250 km/h (160 mph) on the Bayshore Expressway (Wangan), achieved in a member-built or modified car. The club had only around 30 active members at its peak.
Mid Night Club cars included some of the most extreme JDM tuner builds of the era: tuned Porsche 911 Turbo (964 and 993 chassis), Nissan Skyline GT-R (R32, R33, R34) with extensive RB26 modifications, Toyota Supra (A80) with modified 2JZ, and various other cars capable of sustained 300+ km/h running. Member cars typically had highly tuned engines, cage chassis modifications, racing fuel systems, and significant cooling capacity.
The club disbanded in 1999 after a fatal accident on the Wangan involving a Mid Night member colliding with a non-member car (which contained civilians). The club voluntarily ceased operations in respect for the families affected. The cultural legacy continues; Mid Night Club has been depicted in manga (Wangan Midnight), anime adaptations, and video games (the Wangan Midnight series and Mid Night Club series of arcade games).
